In 2010, we began praying fervently for God to lead us in the direction He’d have us go in order to bring His Kingdom into the North Sulphur community. Additionally, we’ve read, we’ve asked, we’ve listened, we’ve watched and we’ve waited. From the very beginning, we knew that this effort of planting the Gospel in North Sulphur would be very unique; so unique that we really do not have an example from which to model. However, God has been overwhelmingly clear on several fronts.
First, Sulphur Community Church exists to make much of God in our neighborhood and to the nations by reflecting Jesus Christ. Our goal is God’s fame. We believe that there are many in our community who do not worship the One True God and we believe that He alone is deserving of their praise. As we see in the gospels, Jesus is our great example of how to make much of God here on earth. Therefore, we will achieve our purpose when we look most like Him. We believe our participation in His plan must happen both locally and globally.
Next, making disciples is what defines Sulphur Community Church. As with most evangelical churches, the Great Commission is what drives us. However, we only begin to achieve these commands when we see our labor being multiplied. In other words, we make disciples who reproduce themselves. This disciple-reproduction is the DNA of Sulphur Community Church.
Next, healthy leadership is essential to the success of this disciple-making effort. Accountability permeates through every layer of Sulphur Community Church, both personally and throughout the ministry. This level of accountability is desired and welcomed. We believe the most effective way to provide the level of accountability and care needed to bear fruit through Sulphur Community Church will come through its leadership. We are first and foremost under the lordship of Jesus Christ. Through the Holy Spirit’s help, we are ‘multi-headed’ in leadership as we see this to be most accurately reflected in scripture.
Sulphur Community Church is unique in how it is being planted. Typically, the progression begins by a local church having a vision for a new work. A team is then formed to create a strategy for starting this new work. Once a strategy is developed and proven, a church planter is selected for the leadership and a ‘mission’ is started. Once this mission is deemed fulfilled, the group that has been reached incorporates into a self-governed church body.
For Sulphur Community Church, a mission was started nearly 5 years ago with many from our sending church, Houston River Baptist Church. At that time, the intentions of this mission, Sulphur Christian Community Coalition, were to simply go into our community to form relationships through service and outreach in order to share the Gospel and build bridges between those reached and the local churches. As time went on, we began to see the need for a new work for this community that represent the demographic of this neighborhood. Sulphur Community Church is that new work. For the most part, this mission work has been autonomous from any denomination and supervised by a board of directors.
Strong affirmation came as we began to have conversations with friends and leaders. Many have committed to praying with us, supporting us, and even going with us to plant Sulphur Community Church. We believe a solid community of Christian friends will be a vital part of resisting the attacks of Satan.
In all of this, God has been gracious.
